As I was walking across campus today, I had one of those “aha” moments. I realized that even though I work here, I had never actually stepped into any of the campus museums. Isn’t it funny how the things closest to us are often the ones we overlook? So, since I was nearby, I decided to change that and make a quick stop at the Weisman Art Museum.
I’ll be honest, I went in with high expectations, and at first, I felt a little disappointed. What I saw didn’t quite match the picture I had built up in my head. But as I wandered from room to room, something shifted. I began to appreciate the quiet, the creativity, and even the unexpectedness of the experience. It wasn’t what I imagined, but it was still worth the stop.
This little adventure reminded me of the importance of staying curious, especially as I grow older. Sometimes, things don’t live up to our expectations, and that’s okay. The beauty is in showing up, trying something new, and being open to whatever the experience brings. I even captured a short video so you can get a glimpse of what it looks like inside.
I plan to visit again in the future, knowing that museums often rotate their exhibits. Who knows? The next time I walk through those doors, I may be surprised in the best possible way. Life after 50 is teaching me that the joy isn’t always in the grand moments, it’s often in the small choices to explore, to try, and to keep discovering.
Below is a short video of my visit.
Don’t be afraid to revisit the familiar with fresh eyes; you might discover something new about the world and about yourself.
